Customer Rating: Summary: Know-how poorly communicated Comment: This was the book that I was looking for, in contrast to others that deal with many aspects of moving. However, the reviews were so negative that I did not buy it, but I managed to find it in a local library. The author clearly has moving expertise but should have partnered with a more experienced writer and communicator, and the book should have more drawings. For example, I think the term "end on" means a different orientation when packing plates vs. coffee cups. Hard to know. Drawings of ways to pack a truck were useful but more of them would be more useful. I had purchased a reel of what the author calls "shrink wrap" from U-Haul, but really did not know what it was good for -- this gave me some ideas, although the reel I had was too narrow for most of the suggested uses. This film sticks to itself and is useful for such things as holding drawers in place in chests. It was useful for fastening rented moving blankets around furniture -- points not explained by U-Haul. Reading it probably contributed something to a successful move in which nothing was broken or damaged, although observing mail order packing and professional mover packing in my childhood was at least as important. This book fits a need but should be redone with a co-author more skilled in communication
Customer Rating: Summary: Waste of Paper Comment: Wow! With the one review on this book I thought it would be the only book I needed to get to make the move, and not waste money. Man, was I wrong! It is written by a professional mover. He does know what he's talking about, but well, he has no idea how to write a book. First of all, the book is almost all blank pages. The average "chapter" is about 2/3 of a page long, with some just one and two sentences! Then, of course you need two pages blank before the next chapter can begin... Half of the actual information in the book is large, hand-drawn diagrams of furniture in a truck, or outlines of what someone elses furniture looks like packed into a truck. It does have some good tips on how to move a grand-piano yourself. If I owned a grand piano I'd pay someone else to move it. His tips are not on how to move frugally, but on how to spend lots of money on moving supplies to save your "fortune" in precious furniture. If you somehow have aquired lots of precious furniture, need to move, and don't have the money for professional movers, and, of course, do have the money for lots of moving supplies, then this may be the book for you. Maybe. I wouldn't know. I'm not that person, and chances are, neither are you.
Customer Rating: Summary: Packing and Moving Tips That Could Save You A Fortune Comment: There is very valuable advice on how to pack all kinds of objects from the usual dishes and clothing to chandeliers and fountains. There are also charts to help you to load trucks and charts to help you determine how large a truck to order. The author also tells you what to pack first, what to pack last, and what to not pack at all. I'm finding it extremely helpful.
